==== ACSA E-News ====

While ACSA was in DC this week, the Forest Service rolled out a proposed rule that will modernize the National Environmental Policy Act, NEPA.  This is the first time in a decade, that a significant change has been proposed.

The proposed new rule continues to comply with NEPA. Every decision will continue to go through the appropriate NEPA analysis. The new rule would allow for more flexibility.  The new rule would:

  *   Focus Environmental Assessments (EA) on the core purpose
  *   Tailor the amount of the EA to the scope of the project
  *   Adopt proven practices and lessons learned
  *   Add new Categorical Exclusions

Changing Places
It was announced this week that former Secretary of the Interior, Sally Jewell, will take over at Nature Conservancy. Jewell served under the Obama administration from 2013 to 2017.

“I actually threw my hat in the ring,” Jewell said, “The Nature Conservancy has obviously been struggling of late with its culture … From my perspective, what was clear is this is an organization that deserves to survive long-term.”

Secretary of the Interior oversees the management of public lands and minerals, including National Parks and Wildlife Refuges, and upholds Federal trust responsibilities to Indian tribes and Native Alaskans. Additionally, Interior is responsible for endangered species conservation and other environmental conservation efforts.
